Here’s where I note a few of my favorite things, whatever delights me.

Cora: Not afraid of Santa Claus plus ridiculously cute.
November 11, 2011
On November 5th, my baby niece Cora turned two!
And Cora and Alex with Woody and Buzz. I love these girls.

I heart this skirt and I’m going to figure out how to make one just like it. Obsessed. Totes. It’s the XCVI High Tea Poplin Skirt.

I can’t get any of these out of my head right now… nor do I want to!

These are my water-baby nieces!
I could say a lot about this, and certain people might even know what I’d say. But I’ll just let this speak for itself. It’s my favorite song. Again.
You are the last drink I never should have drunk
You are the body hidden in the trunk / You are the habit I can’t seem to kick
You are my secrets on the front page every week
You are the car I never should have bought
You are the dream I never should have caught
You are the cut that makes me hide my face
You are the party that makes me feel my age
Like a car crash I can see but I just can’t avoid
Like a plane I’ve been told I never should board
Like a film that’s so bad but I’ve got to stay till the end
Let me tell you now: it’s lucky for you that we’re friends.

This is Cora, age one and a half.
This is Alex, age ten.
I am, as always, proud and smitten.
March 25, 2011
This song will never, ever get old to me.

This.
New Order is the perfect soundtrack to the lovely decadence of the French aristocracy just before the blade came down.

My parents have discovered a way to poop out my niece: The Mall Playground!

I just. Like. This.

It’s Fall!
October 3, 2010
Fridays I’m off at noon, so I stop by my mom’s house to see my baby niece Cora. This week, she’s walking! Ten whole steps! Babies amaze me, especially those who are related to me.

This picture of my long-beloved dog Matisse (Mattie) and my baby niece Alex will always be in my top ten. Unless I ever have my own children. But still. They’re gonna have to work hard to beat this.

If a commercial makes you feel alive, they did their job.

Are they the biggest sunglasses in this city? Then yes, I’ll take them.

Forty and What I Wore
August 19, 2010
New York delights me. Every moment I’m there, I’m thinking: I wanna be a part of this!
And I still love the Tigers, and they won the game, but having worshipped at the church of baseball, I’m now and forever a permanent Yankees fan.
As it turns out, I have two sisters called “Christa.”
August 12, 2010
Love these.

I love this dress. I bought it in 2009 for a Valentine’s picnic date with an ex who, at the time, was trying to not be an ex anymore, except he totally had a horrible anxiety attack on the way there and, in hindsight, I just should have gotten the hell out of there and eff the Frank Sinatra cover swing band playing outdoors at Leu Gardens. I wore it the next day for my future sister-in-law’s wedding shower at a Country Club in Tampa. And then I haven’t worn it since.
I’m glad I kept it though, because it looks cuter than ever with my new and improved arms, and I don’t have any bad memories (or any memories at all now) attached to it.
I wore it today to a meeting at Leu Gardens. (But in the meeting-room pavilion and not the actual garden) I got compliments left and right, from women and men. It really is a striking red dress with polka-dot sheer overlay and an amazing neck line that ties in the back with a big bow, like I’m a gift. I’m thrilled I gave it a new life!

I especially enjoy what I’m wearing today because of my resourcefulness (and my ability to wear clothes as a former co-worker, Nicole, always said).
The black cotton top has zippers for epaulets and tapers to a snug fit at the waist. It’s Max Azria for Miley Cyrus Collection and I found it on the clearance rack for 2 dollars a few months ago at Wal Mart. The skirt I also bought on clearance (it’s Merona from Target) and it was under 5 dollars. I shortened the rather large hem so it would fall at the right place on my leg, and it turned into a bit of a bubble, which I completely enjoy. It’s a fabulous thick, stretchy, canvas fabric in gun-metal grey with a tiny, light pinstripe.
Silver bead strands and my usual Jessica Simpson black platform sling-backs complete the simple, put-together look. Oh, and not pictured: true-red matte lipstick.

With my upcoming Birthday Celebrations 2010 trip to New York, coupled with finishing a book last night that was about a few bad relationships, and living in New York and trying to not let the city swallow you whole, I woke up thinking about Dorothy Parker.
Last January when I was there last, I met my longtime friend Steve Pellegrino for coffee and we ended up eating fifty dollar omelettes at the Algonquin Hotel. We had met at the Subway station at Bryant Park and walked a bit before deciding where to go.
“You’re a woman of letters,” he said. “Let’s go to the Algonquin.”
And so we did. I put my arm through his as we walked. It was cold and I was wearing my tallest boots and he was wearing a handsome cap. And I saw the cat who lives in the lobby.
I removed these quotes from the right side of my blog template in my redesign last week, but I really miss them and thought that they deserved to be SOMEWHERE.
After a breakfast at the Algonquin Hotel, I have a new obsession:
“How like me, to put all my eggs into one bastard.” -Dorothy Parker
“By the time you swear you’re his,
Shivering and sighing,
And he vows his passion is
Infinite, undying —
Lady, make a note of this:
One of you is lying.”
— Dorothy Parker
“I shudder at the thought of men….
I’m due to fall in love again”
— Dorothy Parker
This dress is another good one for a Florida summer day. (I’m so glad I went through my dress boxes a few weeks ago and found all of the summer delights I was missing!) It’s made by George and I picked it up at WalMart last year for 8 bucks on the clearance rack. (Labels don’t matter as long as you pick the right styles that flatter your body with the right fabric.) I throw it in the washer and dryer and it looks great and I always get compliments.

August is always my favorite month because it’s my birthday month.
Frida Kahlo is one of my favorite painters.
How good is this song? I play it over and over and dance around in a cha-cha skirt, pretending I know how.

Hanging around my place on a Saturday, I love wearing the softest t-shirt ever (in fuchsia by DKNY) and these white corduroy shorts by Op.
There’s at least one person on Earth who knows why I love this:
Currently reading this and really enjoying it:

And I’m forever inspired by this:

It was another record hot day and I wore this to work.
I forgot I bought this dress on E-Bay a year ago when I was going through my Mary McFadden dress enthusiast phase, stemming from the fit of a brown pinstripe dress I have of hers.
MMF designs tend to flatter my figure leaving room for curves and falling in the right place on my legs. The fabrics always hug the right places. I wish more designers used her standards for size, like say Isaac Mizrahi, who tends to forget women have curves and makes stiff, boxy dresses.

My redesign used “Paper Dolls of Great Women.” The Michelle Obama was closest to what my body actually looks like, and I drew my own head.
I love paperdolls and fashion. I love drawing clothes. For years, I’ve kept paper notebooks with sketches of my favorite outfits, perhaps making them look nicer than they actually did in real life. I’m going to switch my sketching to this page.

The only thing I miss about changing the look of this blog is seeing my sandhill cranes every time I click “Publish…”
Naturalist and pioneering wildlife biologist Aldo Leopold described sandhill cranes as, “nobility in the midst of mediocrity.”
The cranes are one reason this crazy state is so special.
Love everything about this:

This is a great work dress for a heat wave, although it’s a bit boxy on me. It’s London Times from a Dillard’s 75% off sale last year. It’s machine washable even though it says Dry Clean and it has pockets. I don’t LOVE the way it looks on me, but for work, I prefer function to form.

I’ve had this wrap dress by Max Studio for about four years (bought at Marshall’s in Burbank) and it’s the type of dress that goes with any occasion and is easy to wear. It’s the perfect for travel because it can be rolled up in a suitcase, or sat-in comfortably for hours on a Trans-Atlantic flight and still look fresh. Also, ladies remember: wrap dresses flatter almost any figure.
